Career paths you can take in the music industry

Whether you’re drawn to the stage or prefer to work behind the scenes, the music industry offers a multitude of career paths you can choose from. After decades of experience working in different areas of music – production, education, performance, and more – our co-founders Bindu and Ambi Subramaniam have compiled a list of lucrative career options for anyone interested in music:

1 – Performer

This is the most visible career path you can take – whether you choose to perform live or release your recordings online (or some combination of both). While it’s an exciting chance to share your creativity with the world, it also takes a lot of hard work, practice, travel, and networking.

2 – Educator

If you choose to take the path of a music educator, you can work individually with students in a private practice or teach music performance, theory, and history in a classroom setting. There is also an opportunity to work on curriculum development and research, student assessments, and teacher training programs.

3 – Music Licensing and Publishing Specialist

Music licensing and publishing specialists handle the legal and business aspects of music rights. They ensure that artists receive royalties for their work and manage licensing agreements for the use of music in various media. This role requires knowledge of copyright law and negotiation skills.

4 – Music Producer

Music producers play a crucial role in shaping the sound of a recording. They oversee the entire process, from selecting songs and arranging them to recording and mixing. Producers work closely with artists to achieve the desired sound and often handle technical aspects such as audio engineering and mixing.

5 – Content Creator

This involves showcasing your music on online platforms and building a following. The great part about the role is that it allows you to create your own niche and showcase the most unique aspects of your music. On the flipside, content creators often wear multiple hats and it can be one of the most demanding paths.

Always remember: Every career path is uniquely exciting and challenging. There are new and interesting ways to make a living doing what you love, and there will always be a demand for hard working passionate leaders. Stay tuned for the second part of this series of posts, which will have more career paths you can take.
